A package of bills has been introduced in the House and Senate aimed at eliminating the use of seclusion and restraint in the classroom except for last-resort emergency situations (HB 5409-5418). The legislation would require districts to provide staff training in how to avoid using the techniques to manage student behavior.
MEA continues to engage in behind-the-scenes negotiations regarding the restructuring of Detroit Public Schools and statewide third-grade reading requirements.
MEA has partnered with the Flint Grassroots Initiative to respond to the Flint Water Crisis. As part of the effort, MEA members and leaders last Saturday helped unload and deliver help to Flint residents in the form of water, food, clothing, and hygiene items – including two semi-trailers loaded with pallets of water from Nestlé.
There’s still a little time left to get involved if you want to be part of a statewide classroom supplies drive to benefit students and school employees in Flint.
MEA members interested in helping are asked to conduct supply drives and deliver donations to local UniServ offices for pick-up in late April. The deadline for getting materials turned in is next Tuesday, April 19.
