Student MEA members give Clare Public school a makeover
Over 300 volunteers gathered April 4th and 5th to make over the Clare Public Schools during the second annual Outreach to Teach project hosted by the Student Michigan Education Association at Central Michigan University.
“As future educators we are excited to have an opportunity to improve and appreciate the educational atmosphere. We realize education is not only about teaching in a classroom, but the entire learning environment” said Heather Pilarz, President of SMEA at CMU and coordinator of the event. College students, staff and community members joined together to paint, landscape, donate and add inspirations to the school district.
“While we have been planning for many months, seeing what was accomplished in two days is really amazing” exclaimed coordinator Lyndsey Trieweiler. Hundreds of hours of planning and over $8,000 went into this project.
The school district was chosen after meeting with administration and staff, “It was amazing to work with such a community based school that was in need, an exciting bond between SMEA at CMU and Clare Public Schools has been formed”
said Amanda King, coordinator and incoming SMEA CMU President, “We are already looking forward to next year!”
“The best part of it all was when we returned Monday morning and the students came back from Spring Break… having students be excited to see everything and get geared back up for the rest of the year made it all worth it” said Molly Preston, coordinator of the event. Thank you to all the volunteers, project leaders, staff and area support received to make this a truly spectacular event!
