Here are some simple, easy steps to vote absentee in Michigan Elections.

Finish your ballot and seal it in the included envelope. Don’t forget to sign the back! Remember to check out MEA’s online voter guide at meavotes.org to find MEA-recommended candidates in your area. If you pick up your ballot in person from your clerk, you can fill it out on the spot and return it then and there!

Apply for your absentee ballot. Use the Online Absent Voter Ballot application OR complete a hard-copy application for an absentee ballot and return it by mail or in-person to your local clerk’s office.

DID YOU KNOW? You can vote early with an absentee ballot at your local election clerk’s office during the 40 days before an upcoming election. On Election Day, registered voters must vote at their local polling place.

Mail or drop your ballot off at your clerk’s office or an approved absentee ballot drop box. Your ballot must arrive by election day in order to be counted, so if in doubt drop your ballot off.

Request your absentee ballot as early as possible. Your clerk will begin sending out ballots about six weeks before election day (at which time you can also vote in-person at the clerk’s office).  It's recommended that within four weeks of election day, you request your ballot in person to avoid mail delays.

If you need to register to vote, you can do so online until 14 days before election day – after that, you must register in person at your clerk’s office.

If you don’t mail your ballot back by two weeks from election day, it’s suggested that you return your ballot in-person to your clerk’s office or an approved absentee ballot drop box.

On election day, polls are open 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. local time. At your clerk’s office, you can register to vote and then cast your ballot until 8:00 p.m.  You can vote absentee until 4:00 p.m. the day before election day at your clerk's office, after that you must vote at your polling location on election day.
