In the late 1800s and early 1900s, professional issues – class sizes, health and safety matters, classroom supplies – weren’t properly addressed in many districts. Men and women weren’t paid comparable wages for comparable work. In 1915, female teachers couldn’t marry while under contract to teach nor could they dye their hair, smoke cigarettes or wear less than two petticoats.
