Tenure provides a teacher with due process rights to protect against arbitrary employment practices, including discharge. Prior to the Tenure Act, teachers could be fired or disciplined for just about any reason. For more than a century, teachers were powerless and afraid to speak for fear of losing their livelihood. Tenure gave them the right to think out loud and to act when necessary. Michigan was the 25th state to have tenure without exception for all teachers.
