In 1976, at the persistent request of frustrated education support professionals from around the state, the MEA began to organize noncertified personnel, quickly forming the Michigan Education Association Organization (MEAO), later known as the Michigan Educational Support Professional Association (MESPA). MESPA and MEA merged in 1984.
