So-called "Right to Work" legislation is likely to move through the Legislature as early as next week. Right-wing legislators are hoping that MEA members will be too distracted by the holiday season to notice.

MEA has provided the Governor's Oxford Foundation with a list of recommendations for properly funding an effective public education system. Using Gov. Snyder's 2011 Education Message as a starting point, the Oxford Foundation is a work group charged with rewriting the School Aid Act of 1979. In July, Project Director Richard McLellan, called for input from stakeholders in Michigan's public education system.

In a tele-press conference and news release yesterday, the Protect Working Families coalition called on news outlets to pull the latest 30-second TV ad by Citizens Protecting Michigan’s Constitution blasting Proposal 2—the constitutional amendment to protect collective bargaining and working families. The ad is full of lies, making outrageous claims of what Proposal 2 would do and attempting to scare away voters.

Unfortunately the House voted 57-48 in favor the (MPSERS) overhaul, a compromise that includes a study to fully transition from a defined benefit (DB) to a defined contribution (DC) system. Earlier in the day the Senate passed the bill, SB 1040, by a vote of 21-16, sending it to the House. The bill moved to the Governor's office for his signature.

The chance to save $25 by registering early for the 2012 Minority and Women Leadership Program (MIP) and the Social Justice Institute has been extended to Aug. 10. Until then, the registration fee is $50. After that date, the registration fee increases to $75.

Detroit EM imposes teacher contract

Roy Roberts, the state-appointed Emergency Manager for the Detroit public schools, has imposed a contract on teachers. According to PA 4, the Emergency Manager has the power to void current contracts and make changes to working conditions. Details of the new contract won't be available until AFT Michigan meets with its members.
