MEA applauds judge’s ruling that extra 3 percent school employee retirement health contribution is unconstitutional

April 4, 2011 - Regarding today’s ruling that the Legislature requiring an additional 3 percent contribution by school employees for retiree health insurance is unconstitutional, the following statement can be attributed to MEA President Iris K. Salters:

“We’re pleased to see this decision come down on the side of public school employees and their families. We’ve long maintained that last year’s actions by lawmakers were unconstitutional – even the Legislature has to follow due process of law.

“We would be disappointed if the state chooses to appeal this ruling, but if they do, we will continue to fight not only this case, but all attacks on public education, school employees, students and the middle class at large.”
