Mother-daughter team demand sustainable school budget

Kathy Bowler and Christa SymondsEighty-one year old Dorothy L. Arthur and her teacher-daughter, Spring Jackson, support expanding the Michigan sales tax to cover services, a graduated income tax, and other efforts to provide students with a quality education.

Arthur, a retired teacher, carried a hand-made sign promoting these initiatives at the Enough is Enough rally, while Jackson sported multiple “Proud Union Member” buttons and stickers.

“We need a new plan,” Jackson said, explaining that balancing the budget on the backs of public school employees and retirees isn’t a long-term solution to funding problems.
