Summer birds: Retired teacher, spouse travel from Florida for rally

Suzzanne WilsonSuzzanne and Gerry Wilson are enjoying retirement in Florida, but they still care about what happens in Michigan public schools.

Suzzanne Wilson, a middle school science teacher who retired from the Troy school district in 1999, travelled to Michigan last week to attend the Enough is Enough rally at the Capitol. The couple has four children – all teachers, including three who work in Michigan schools – and they worry about the toll that the ongoing budget crisis is taking on students. They’re also concerned about lawmakers who want to meddle with retirees’ pensions and health care.

“When I was a teacher, I was blessed with being able to team teach,” Suzzanne Wilson said. “It really helped the students. Now, schools are cutting budgets and they can’t afford to continue these programs and they’re increasing class sizes.”
