Kindergarten start date pushed back
Under SB 315-316 unanimously passed by the Senate this week, some 4-year olds will have to wait to start kindergarten, unless their parents file a request with a school district.
Currently, children can start kindergarten in the fall if they are turning five years old by Dec. 1. With the new legislation, that start date will be gradually pushed back to Nov. 1 for the 2013-14 school year; Oct. 1 for the 2014-15 school year and Sept. 1 for the 2015-16 school year.
Legislators were influenced by many in the education community who have long said that some 4 year olds are not socially ready to start school and can cause class disruptions. MEA supported this bill.
