Backgrounder - National Day of Action

April 4, 2011 has been designated as a National Day of Action. Labor unions, civil rights organizations and religious leaders across the country will use this day to speak out against the continued attacks on labor and the middle class. This day of collective action gives us the opportunity to stand up for our rights.

April 4 is especially appropriate since it marks the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in Memphis, TN in 1968. King was in Memphis that day to stand with striking sanitation workers who had been on the picket line for weeks. Their message was “I am a man.”

This event is expected to be the biggest nationwide mobilization of workers in decades. It represents more than a call to action for workers’ rights; it also commemorates the continued struggle for basic human rights and dignity.
There are local community activities all across Michigan. MEA is encouraging local associations to participate in a Call to Action activity on that day.

Talking Points

  • The continued attacks on school employees and their unions represent a bigger effort to destroy the middle class which has been shrinking rapidly.
  • School employees are vital to the goal of a better Michigan future. Their job of providing a quality education for every student and preparing them for the workforce is essential to Michigan’s economic survival.
  • School employees, and other workers acting together with their unions, are the last best defense to stop the attacks. Without them, we can’t restore balance to our economy and the attacks will continue.
  • It’s time to stop the partisan politics. We must hold our leaders accountable to their promise of creating jobs. Those jobs will create the balance and restore our middle class.
  • Politicians are looking to cut wages, eliminate benefits, outsource jobs, and balance the budget on the backs of our middle class workers. Those same politicians are making sure big businesses and CEOs are receiving tax breaks while the middle class suffers.

Sample letter to the editor

Writing a letter to the editor is a quick way to share your views with your community. This is a sample letter that you could personalize or use as a reference to write your own, unique letter.

Dear Editor:

For too long, we’ve considered short-term fixes and attacks on school employees to be “education reform”. It’s time we define education reform in terms of balanced solutions that will help students graduate high school and be prepared for college or other post-secondary opportunities. MEA has created a path to education reform with its  A+ Agenda. Go to www.mea.org to read their bold proposals. The A+ Agenda provides the way to real reform based on high-quality research and best practices. We would do well to follow their lead.

Sincerely,

(YOUR NAME, JOB TITLE AND CONTACT INFORMATION)
