Michigan loses out on RTTT grant again

For the third time, Michigan has missed out on federal Race to the Top funding—this time for early childhood development programs.

The state had applied for a $70 million grant that included plans to implement a rating and improvement system for early learning programs, a data-producing assessment of children entering kindergarten, and a pilot child care scholarship.

According to the state Department of Education, the loss of the grant money won’t stop the programs from going forward, but it will slow them down.

California, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Washington did receive grants totaling $500 million.
