AYP Resources KEYS 2.0—KEYS 2.0 is a resource for determining the strengths and weaknesses in schools. It measures the 42 indicators of a quality school through an online survey, provides guidance and resources for making changes based on the data, and is an important tool in the school improvement process. KEYS 2.0 can be used by individual schools within a district or by all schools within a district. When all schools participate, district results are generated as well as individual school results. NEA makes the KEYS 2.0 program and its resources available to schools at no charge. C.A.R.E.—Culture, Abilities, Resilience and Effort form the basis of the C.A.R.E. program, which provides strategies for closing the achievement gaps. C.A.R.E. provides ready-to-use approaches, strategies, and activities that help educators (a) develop a culturally competent learning community in their classrooms, (b) recognize and strengthen students' abilities, (c) promote students' resilience, and (d) engage student motivation and effort. The strategies and activities are a starting point for educators to strengthen their success with culturally and linguistically diverse students. For more information contact Carolyn Logan in MEA's Professional Development and Human Rights Department at 517-332-6551 ext. 6212. Professional Growth and Development Grants—This program provides funding to support member-driven school improvement activities that impact student achievement including, but not limited to, conferences, workshop and in-service sessions, research and other projects that address the needs and professional practice of our members. These grants are specifically targeted to assist non-Title I schools that have not made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two or more consecutive years and are in the corrective action phase. Applications are available online at www.mea.org and www.mymea.org. Questions may be directed to Joan Mapson, director of MEA's Professional Development and Human Rights Department at 517-332-6551 ext. 5506. Effective Strategies for Supporting Instruction in Reading—MEA's resources include "A Guide for Parents and Paraprofessional to Support Literacy Instruction," which helps equip parents and paraprofessionals with direction and strategies on how to support a child's classroom experience in reading and also gives guidance to those people working with specific learning disabilities. MEA also provides professional development sessions in strategies to support reading instruction for paraprofessionals. For more information contact Carolyn Logan in MEA's Professional Development and Human Rights Department at 517-332-6551 ext. 6212. Reach and Teach for Learning—MEA, working with the Michigan Department of Education and other education organizations, offers "Reach and Teach for Learning," a program that examines how and why we need to reach each and every student to keep students from slipping through the inevitable "cracks" that emerge when we fail to recognize individual learning needs and styles. This program is offered to applicant schools on an annual basis. Participating school teams meet together multiple times throughout the year for intensive professional development which is then moved into practice at their individual schools. For more information contact Linda Keway in MEA's Professional Development and Human Rights Department at 517-332-6551 ext. 6217. DiSC—MEA has certified instructors in DiSC, a communication tool that helps educators and others understand their communication styles, how those styles affect others, and how to work effectively with the people around them. DiSC is particularly effective in helping schools build more effective teams as staff members learn to understand each other and work together. For more information ask for Bob Harris or Linda Keway in MEA's Professional Development and Human Resources Department or Rosemary Carey or Karen Schulz in the Communications Department.
