Delegate Dialogue — Sunday, July 6
Marla Grant, Jackson
- Jackson ISD special education teacher assistant
- RA delegate for four years
What has been your favorite part of the RA this year?
“I always like the democratic process at the RA, seeing a meeting of 9,000 people run smoothly while letting everyone have a say. It’s much better than other meetings that have been rushed through.
"But at this RA, the Friendship Night on Thursday was great – it was a wonderful night and a wonderful tribute to Reg (Weaver, outgoing NEA president.)”
Why is it important for your members that you be an RA delegate?
“I have a different perspective, since I’m elected as a statewide delegate. I have a lot more points of view to take into account. I also have a little more freedom to listen to all the arguments and decide what is best for Michigan as a whole.”
What advice would you give someone who wants to become an RA delegate?
“Make sure this is something you want to commit to. Attending the RA is about service to your members back home, including staying in the hall, discussing and voting on the issues. You’re setting policies and procedures for our nation’s educators. You should definitely take it seriously.”
