Who’s Who and What’s What in the MEA

  • MEA membership stands at more than 160,000 members. That includes elementary and secondary teachers, higher education faculty and staff, educational support personnel, retired school employees and college students who plan on becoming teachers.

  • More than 1,000 local associations are affiliated with MEA.

  • Iris Salters became MEA president in Feb. 2006.

  • Steve Cook was elected MEA vicepresident in April 2006.

  • Peggy McLellan became MEA secretarytreasurer in April 2006.

  • Lu Battaglieri assumed the position of MEA executive director in Feb. 2006.

  • Delegates who are elected by locals to attend two annual Representative Assemblies (RAs) each year decide MEA policies.

  • In between the fall and spring RAs, the MEA Board of Directors meets six times a year to make policy.

  • The nine members of the MEA Executive Committee meet regularly to conduct business.

  • MEA Communications, ESP/Organizing/Higher Education/Bargaining, Government Affairs, Legal Services, Professional Development and Human Rights, Research and UniServ provide services to members. If you need help, let your association rep and leadership know.
