This fall, Michigan will have 306 charter schools with seven new ones opening for the 2015-15 school year. While this is the fewest number of new schools since the Legislature lifted the cap on university-authorized charter schools in 2011, it is the highest number of charters Michigan has ever had.
Michigan ranks 33rd for child well-being, putting it behind every other state in the Midwest, according to the annual Kids Count report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The recently released report attributes the ranking to increases in the number of children living in poverty.
