Celebrate National Teacher Day/School Family Day

EAST LANSING, Mich., May 5, 2009 – If you’re reading this, chances are you have a teacher to thank. Today is a good day to do that.

May 5 is National Teacher Day/School Family Day, the day set aside to recognize the many contributions of our teachers and school staff. Activities are planned at schools across Michigan to honor those who give so much to others. From the classroom teacher who fosters a first love of reading to the bus driver who soothes first day jitters, public school employees dedicate their lives to guiding, teaching and caring for students.

“Teachers and school support staff are the backbone of our educational system,” said Michigan Education Association President Iris. K. Salters. “We impact the lives of thousands of people, and we recognize that what we do goes far beyond the classroom and worksite.

“The MEA salutes its 160,000 members who give 110 percent not just on this day, but every day to help prepare our students for the jobs Michigan needs,” said Salters.
