MEA commends President Obama for strong stand for community colleges, students
Statement from MEA President Iris K. Salters
EAST LANSING, Mich., July 14, 2009 – Regarding President Barack Obama’s remarks on community colleges in Warren this afternoon, the following statement can be attributed to MEA President Iris K. Salters:
“This afternoon, President Obama issued a challenge to America’s community colleges to be key players in aiding our economic recovery through training a great workforce – and he backed up that challenge with $12 billion worth of resources to help community colleges make it happen. He also challenged students to commit to education beyond high school – a step that is critical to being ready for the 21st century jobs that await them. The Michigan Education Association commends President Obama for embracing these two key beliefs that our members across Michigan share.
“Michigan’s community colleges have long been centers of excellence in post-secondary education and job training for students of all ages. MEA members at community colleges – just as those in other K-12 and higher education institutions across the state – are proud to prepare students for the jobs Michigan needs.
“That preparation takes many forms – from helping students transition from high school to a four-year institution, providing access to critical training so students can fulfill dreams of holding high-tech jobs, or opening new doors for job seekers looking to refine their skills or start new careers.
“In every area, MEA’s members are committed to serving students’ needs and living up to the challenge President Obama has placed before us to provide great community colleges for great Michigan communities.”
