Flint teachers file ULP against school district for health care imposition
Flint, Mich., September 29, 2009 – Today Flint teachers filed Unfair Labor Practice charges against the Flint school district for imposing a health care plan on the teachers without bargaining the specifics of the plan. The two sides have been bargaining since May 2008 and have been in mediation. The teachers filed for fact-finding on March 13, 2009.
"The school district has made the whole bargaining process very difficult," said Michele Stinson, United Teachers of Flint (UTF) president. "This most recent action violates all bargaining laws."
The charges accuse the district of imposing the health plan even though they are forbidden from any kind of imposition once a petition for fact-finding has been filed. Also, the district is charged with declaring itself the policy holder with a fact-finding hearing pending.
Stinson said, "We had no idea the district would perform such an illegal act. We haven't bargained any terms of this new insurance plan. Members have no idea of coverage or cost."
To reinforce their concern, Flint teachers will hold an informational picket tomorrow, Sept. 30, at the Flint Board of Education building on E. Kearsley. Picketing will begin at 4 p.m.
