Read Across America coming to Warren and Lansing on March 1
The famous “Cat-a-Van,” featuring Dr. Seuss’ “Cat in the Hat,” will make stops in Warren and Lansing on Friday, March 1, as part of the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day.
In Warren, the tour will stop at Green Acres Elementary in the morning, and then make the drive up to Lansing’s Fairview Elementary for an afternoon event. Each event will feature local community leaders and celebrities reading with students. Having the Cat-A-Van tour in Michigan on Read Across America Day is an honor for Michigan…and a treat for students at these schools.
Now in its 16th year, the NEA’s Read Across America program continues the NEA’s ongoing commitment to building a nation of readers and mobilizing school employees around an issue they care deeply about: making sure all students have access to books and the skills and support they need to read and learn.
Sponsoring this year’s Read Across America is Delta Dental of Michigan, which partnered with the NEA to produce the Read Across America calendar and other materials. Delta Dental of Michigan is also helping to support the Read Across America reading tour, as well as provide other resources throughout the year, including oral health tips and classroom resources for educators.
Oral health and literacy are related. Consider these facts:
- Students who don’t read at grade level by fourth grade are four times more likely to drop out than those who do.
- Annually, oral health problems cause students across the nation to miss 51 million school hours.
- Students who have experienced recent oral health pain are four times more likely to have lower grade point averages than their counterparts who have not.
- Students who are absent miss critical instruction time, especially in early grades where reading skills are a focus.
To that end, Delta Dental is asking children and their parents to brush for two minutes, two times per day and read for 20 minutes each day. That’s a daily total of 24 minutes focusing on developing good oral health and good reading skills.
