Strong public education key to Granholm's economic plan

Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s ambitious“Jobs Today, Jobs Tomorrow” economic plan is built on a solid foundation of public education in Michigan.
Her plan—to protect the jobs we have, create the new jobs we need in the 21st century and help the people of Michigan get the skills and education they need to prosper—is working.
Search engine giant Google’s
decision in July to open an office in Ann Arbor is the latest
example of the plan’s success.
Google’s Ann Arbor office
promises 1,000 new jobs that will
be filled by well-educated, critical
thinkers created in large part
by Michigan’s public education
system.
In the words of David Fischer, Google’s director of online sales and operations,“We see Michigan as an ideal location to recruit the best and brightest workers.” Michigan’s community colleges anduniversities are producing the highly skilled workforce that will fill these knowledge-based, high-tech jobs needed by Google and other companies.
Granholm believes that excellence in public education is key to improving the state’s economy and helping workers transition into the new careers of the 21st century. She’s working to make sure every student has the preparation and opportunity to earn a college degree or technical certification needed for success in the workplace.
Under Granholm’s leadership, K-12funding for public schools is at an all-time high. She has led the effort to double the number of college graduates in Michigan over the next 10 years.
To assure that every student is prepared for college or technical training when they finish high school, Granholm successfully fought for reform that will require all high school students to complete a rigorous new curriculum.
And because she believes college
must be affordable for all families,
she is fighting to make a $4,000
scholarship available to all Michigan
students who continue their education
beyond high school.
The governor’s economic and education policies are creating a brighter future for Michigan, and we should support her efforts.
