Your support needed for Educational Funding Guarantee

More than 11,000 parents, school employees and concerned citizens marched to the state Capitol in June 2005 urging the Legislature to support adequate school funding. The K-16 Coalition for Michigan’s Future then led a successful petition drive for annual funding increases. The funding proposal will now appear on the Nov. 7 ballot, since the Legislature failed to act on the petitions this summer.

Current polling shows a solid level of support for the Educational Funding Guarantee initiative that will appear on the Nov. 7 general election ballot as Proposal 5.

But until the election, expect a barrage of attack ads condemning the proposal, public education and public school employees, orchestrated by the Michigan Chamber of Commerce.

That’s why it’s critical that MEA members raise their voices now in support the Educational Funding Guarantee, a reasonable proposal that will provide annual funding guarantees equal to the rate of inflation for K-12 public schools, community colleges and universities.

We must stand up now and deliver our message to Michigan voters on why a “yes” vote on the Educational Funding Guarantee is critical to Michigan’s economic future and to the future of our students.

We must fight for our students and fight for the funding they will need to succeed in the knowledge-based 21st century economy. Help carry the message to the voting public—your friends, family and neighbors—and urge them to vote YES for the Educational Funding Guarantee on Nov. 7.
