MEA hearings on dropout crisis continue through early October

Dropout hearings

MEA President Iris K. Salters (second from right) comments at the first MEA-sponsored hearing on Michigan’s dropout crisis in Grand Rapids.

Finding ways to fix Michigan’s dropout crisis is the focus of MEA-sponsored public hearings that started last month and continue through early October, part of a statewide initiative to increase the number of high school graduates.

“One dropout is too many—for our students, for our communities and for our state,” said MEA President Iris K. Salters.

The hearings are open to the public. Invited guests also will provide testimony about how the dropout crisis affects the economy, families and crime. Information will be presented to the Legislature and Gov. Jennifer Granholm to help in the development of sound education policy.

Joining MEA as partners on the initiative are the Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators, Kent Intermediate School District, Michigan’s Children, Michigan’s Charter Schools, Michigan’s Promise and Michigan Future.

Hearings have already taken place in some communities. For information about the remaining hearings, go to www.mea.org/dropouts.
