TEF: Fighting for your students

We need to fight

MEA’s initiative to provide stable funding for public schools is gaining momentum, Executive Director Lu Battaglieri said.

“We’re out spreading the word and gaining support,” Battaglieri told two dozen MEA members attending a recent workshop on the initiative, called TEF (for Tax structure, Economic development policies and Funding for schools).

TEF is based on the premise that investing in public education will bring far more economic return than the “business- as-usual” approach of awarding tax breaks to businesses.

MEA argues that fairer tax structures and sensible economic development policies will be needed to achieve stable funding for education.

The first steps are being taken to reach that goal—educating MEA members, the public, the media and policymakers about TEF.

We asked four teachers at the workshop for their reaction to TEF (see above).
