The MEA Advantage
35 reasons why membership matters
Reasons 21-30
Liability insurance.
Up to $1 million worth of work-related liability insurance is
provided at no additional cost to members. The insurance covers you
if you’re faced with either a civil or criminal complaint that arises in
the course of your work. In addition, you receive up to $500 worth of
legal fees during an investigation stage that may lead to the filing of a
criminal complaint that is related to your work.
Job protection.
After a series of state laws known as the “Pupil Protection Laws” were enacted, five
support staff employees from Southfield were fired because their names appeared on a
state list of convicted felons working in Michigan public schools. MEA’s legal support
helped the members win their jobs back—all five were rehired.
Legal strength.
MEA employs several full-time attorneys and also retains prestigious law firms to help protect you in a variety of situations, including wage and hour law violations, unfair labor practices, layoff and recall, retirement, fringe benefits, unemployment compensation, discrimination, civil rights, health and safety.
Support system.
Local associations belong to larger coordinating councils, regions and zones that
provide extensive support, including but not limited to, bargaining and communications
assistance, training and grievance processing.
