On the Cover:
The jobs of bus drivers in Muskegon County’s Reeths-Puffer school district were threatened by privatization, along with those of drivers in other county schools. Association members from across the county helped the drivers beat privatization, though efforts to outsource other vital support services continue. Fighting Privatization coverage.

The MEA Voice is published for Sue Neitzke, a bus driver for Northwest Community
Schools in Jackson County, and more than 160,000 other MEA members. Neitzke, a driver
for 12 years, speaks out against privatization. “As school employees, we’ve established
rapport with students and parents,” she said. “They know us and trust us. We’re part of the
community. We’ve reached into our own pockets and given kids lunch money or bought
them hats and mittens in the winter. With workers from a private company, you won’t have
that same caring connection and close ties to the schools, parents and students.”
