Mike Miller, a history teacher from
Ferndale, is thankful for locally bargained
health benefits. The value of quality health
insurance hit home for Miller, who started
teaching in 1963, late last year. Following
complications after an emergency medical
procedure, Miller was diagnosed with
cancer. He underwent chemotherapy to
help shrink tumors. “MESSA has been
a lifesaver,” says Mike Miller, who has
rarely been ill over the years. “Without it, I
would’ve lost my house.”

Your MEA Voice is published for Beverly Baldwin of the United Teachers of Flint and more
than 160,000 other MEA members. Baldwin, who teaches sixth grade at Durant-Turri-Mott
Elementary School, says every public school employee deserves quality health insurance.
“I am so grateful to have the MESSA insurance plan,” Baldwin said at April’s Minority
Involvement Program Conference. “Having a quality health care plan is invaluable.” In
the classroom, Baldwin tries to help students prepare for the “real world.” “We discuss
real-life experiences in class, like the Don Imus comments and firing, and the Virginia Tech
shootings. We have honest discussions that help students become critical thinkers and
get them ready for the real world.”
