MEA is taking its leadership initiative, Building Full Capacity Locals, on the road.

“We don’t want distance to be a factor on whether leaders receive the training they need to strengthen their locals,” BFCL coordinator Teri Battaglieri said.

“While many of our training sessions are at MEA headquarters (in East Lansing), we’ll schedule trainings in zones around the state to make them accessible to as many leaders as possible.”

Traverse City hosted BFCL training in October.

More than 75 EA and ESP leaders from northern Michigan and other parts of the state attended the full-day training that covered crisis bargaining, political action, legal issues, grievances, communications, privatization and MEA’s new TEF initiative to provide fair and adequate funding for schools.

John Scrudato, Traverse City teacher and 15-A Coordinating Council co-chair, appreciates the BFCL “road show.”

“The training is worthwhile and well done,” Scrudato said. “The MEA staff does an excellent job in presenting the training. It saves our members travel time (up to four hours one-way to MEA headquarters from the Traverse City area) and money for food and lodging. We really appreciate BFCL coming to us.”

Local leaders interested in hosting a BFCL training in their zones should contact Battaglieri, telephone 800/292-1934, e-mail tbattaglieri@mea.org, for details.
