Whitmer blasts Republican Senators for SB 1040 vote
No Democratic amendments made it into SB 1040 as passed by the Senate yesterday--not even Minority Leader Sen. Gretchen Whitmer's proposal to prefund the retirement system.
It’s surprising because her amendment was what Gov. Snyder had proposed. The practice of prefunding retirement ended during former Gov. Engler's time in office and is largely responsible for the current $45 billion unfunded liability in the system.
While all Democrats voted “no” on SB 1040, it’s her no-vote explanation that eloquently explains why the bill is not an effective long-term solution for fixing the retirement system’s problems. It points out that legislators again are using a political agenda to scapegoat current and former school employees and blame them for all of the state’s economic troubles.
Her words are a great motivator. Contact your state representative today and urge them to vote NO on SB 1040.
