A bill to prohibit school calendar and schedule as a bargaining topic is expected to move from a state House committee this week – it’s time to contact your state representatives, and get parents and other interested community members involved.
House Bill 4163 removes local control of an educational issue that parents care deeply about. Educators on the frontlines know what their communities need in terms of calendar and schedule.
We’ve won this fight before—our calls and emails helped to stop this same measure from advancing to a House vote last year. Now the House Education Reform Committee has scheduled a vote on Thursday to send the measure for full House consideration.
When contacting lawmakers, ask your lawmakers some key questions: What problem is this supposed to fix? Do you support local control? Do you value the input of school employees?
Teachers and support staff should have the opportunity to work together with parents and administrators to create and implement flexible scheduling, such as a balanced calendar. Adopting another prohibited subject of bargaining that prevents both management and labor from working on these critical issues is not in the best interest of our students.
Please call or email your state representative today to oppose HB 4163 — ask questions and reinforce that educators are the experts on the front lines who know what our students and communities need in terms of calendar and schedule.
