Changes are coming to education policy in Michigan, and several opportunities exist for MEA members and others to get involved.
The latest Michigan Department of Education (MDE) survey, open through Nov. 17, is gathering feedback from parents of school-aged children on a wide range of important issues, including student assessment, school accountability, support for struggling schools, teacher and leader quality, and more.
In addition, a series of forums have been scheduled around the state from the end of November through mid-December. The forums will discuss proposed changes in policy related to Title program supports, equitable access to high-quality educators, school and district accountabilitly, and the state assessment system – including possible changes to the frequency of M-STEP testing.
Educators also are encouraged to sign up to be part of an ongoing Virtual Focus Group that offers opinions on draft policies, and to sign up for regular email updates on Michigan’s movement toward implementing the new federal education law known as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
The public forums, entitled “Michigan’s Move to the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA),” will gather input from educators, advocates, parents, students, and the public to finalize Michigan’s ESSA plan. Michigan’s final plan will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Education in early March 2017.
The series kicks off with a public forum and live webcast on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016, from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at Wayne RESA in Wayne County.
The kick-off event will be live streamed through MI Streamnet (www.mistreamnet.org), allowing participants across the state to join in from their personal computers or devices. All participants (on-site and remote) will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback during the event and afterwards through an online survey. On-site participants will also have the option to participate in small focus groups with presenters to provide more in-depth feedback on specific components of the plan.
